Ask an incoming Democrat delegate coming to the DNC in Denver whether they drink beer. Their reply most certainly would be, "Yes we can." It's only 26 days from the start of the Democrat National Convention. While both Barrack Obama and John McCain jockey for positions just right and left of center, there's nothing centrist about the beers being brewed up in Denver for conventioneers. Denver area brewers have been planning and preparing for the onslaught of thirsty beer drinkers seeking diversity, character, complexity and a flavor they can savor. There are lots of special beers "conditioning, cellaring, lagering and aging." That's beer talk for "getting better," and getting ready for August 25, the starting gate for the convention. I've asked some of the area brewers, what's on tap? Here are a few remarkable brews that will be released soon. Brian Dunn, owner and head brewer at Great Divide Brewing Company will be releasing "Liberally Hopped American Pale Ale" on draft for the DNC. I'm sure you'll find it on tap at selected accounts in downtown Denver, but in case you want to go right to the source, visit the brewery's taproom at 2201 Arapahoe Street and is open from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday-Friday, and 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Saturday. Boulder's Avery Brewing Company will be offering Ale to the Chief Presidential Pale Ale Wynkoop's new head brewer Andy Brown has created "Obamanator" Maibock lager. "Strong in spirit with much depth," says the brewery. German tradition has it that any beer named with an "-ator" suffix indicates bock extra strength beer. I haven't had the opportunity to taste this brew but I'm sure it will have plenty of fortitude and visions of "Yes we can" – a brew that will certainly inspire. It's brewed with "bready Vienna malt and dry hopped with Simcoe and Tettnanger hops." Find it at Wynkoop Brewing Company, 1634 18th St., Denver. Rock Bottom – Denver and brewmaster John McClure are releasing their "Political Ale" on July 21st in advance of the pilgrims descending upon the city. Between 6 and 6:30 on the 21st you can get a free sample and hear Brewmaster McClure talk about the ingredients and the philosophic style Political Ale is representing. Get on down to Rock Bottom - Denver, 1001 16th St (on the mall) to get the lowdown on the politics of this brew. What's going on at the MillerCoors owned Blue Moon Brewing Co. at the Sandlot at Coors Field (note MillerCoors does not appear to have a website for the Sandlot brewery)? There's been discussion about whether Peanut Butter Ale will be ready in time for the DNC. An insider tells me that this is the ultimate Elephant Lover Ale for the folks in Minneapolis who wish they were in Denver to protest. Who knows, perhaps two of their beers normally on tap, Right Field red ale and Blue Moon by MillerCoors wheat beer may have elephants and donkeys dancing on the tap handles? I would think that this time around, Blue Moon by MillerCoors will be their best seller. Also, they've brewed up specially labeled commemorative New West Amber Ale in one liter bottles for DNC VIPs. I don't know how accessible these beers will be to those who pay good money for their beers, but you can always reward yourself with many of their award winning brews live and on tap. A little further afield, 30 miles due northwest in Boulder, Avery Brewing Company is releasing a special pale ale called, "Ale to the Chief." It's preamble begins, "We the Brewers of Avery Brewing Company, in order to form a more perfect ale…." Head brewer and owner Adam Avery says this limited batch offering is a "Presidential Pale Ale" style. Adam insists this beer is "NOT a double American Pale…please use the term so I can get loads of for making up a silly style name." Adam, are you saying, "Bring it on." ? That really didn't work very well for our current president. Denver has been dubbed the Napa of beer, so you can be assured that there will be no shortage of terrific locally produced beers in downtown that week. wadi beer bakelite schlitz beer sign
